KeryFlex Nail Restoration for Fungal Toenails

There’s an epidemic of people walking into spas and nail salons … and walking out with a fungal toenail infection.

Tools don’t get sanitized properly. Foot baths recirculate contaminated water. An inexperienced nail tech cuts your cuticles just a bit too short. And fungi find their way in.

One of the main reasons we founded the Foot & Body Boutique in the first place was to help you avoid this nightmare scenario.

But what if you already have fungal toenails? What then?

Well, we can help you with that, too! It’s called the KeryFlex Nail Restoration system, and in just 30 minutes we can remodel and restore your nail so that it looks great, feels great, and restores your confidence … today!

A Quick Solution to an Age-Old Problem

If you or a loved one has ever had fungal toenail treatment—or even cured their infection—you already know how agonizingly long the process can take. Because there are really two separate problems you have to deal with:

  1. The fungi that are causing the infection.
  2. The visible nail damage they produce.

The first problem, you can deal with in as little as a few weeks to a few months using oral medications, or newer laser therapy treatments.

But the second problem may take up to a year or even longer, depending on how quickly (or slowly) your nails grow.

KeryFlex takes that enormous problem and makes it an afterthought. It’s a cosmetic procedure that provides instant gratification and beautifully restored nail appearance in a single appointment.

Now, it’s important to clarify that KeryFlex is not a treatment for fungal toenails. It’s an answer to the second problem, but not the first. It won’t do anything about the fungi causing problems in the first place.

However, KeryFlex is fully compatible with most fungal toenail treatments, including the advanced laser therapy provided by our sister practice, Carmel Foot Specialists. (We’re happy to refer you if you’d like—it’s right next door!)

In other words, while the podiatrist next door works on eliminating the underlying fungal problem so you can get fully healthy nails back in the future, we’ll work on beautifying your nails in the here and now. We’re biased, but we think we make a great pair!

What Is KeryFlex, exactly?

So now, the details.

KeryFlex is procedure that remodels, reshapes, and restores the appearance of a healthy nail using a medical grade resin that bonds firmly to your own nail.

This is a massive improvement over fake acrylic nails, for a number of important reasons:

  • KeryFlex is non-porous, non-permeable, and won’t trap moisture underneath (which can make the original infection worse).

  • KeryFlex is durable yet flexible. It looks, feels, and moves just like a “real” natural nail does, bends with your natural movement, and won’t damage or irritate the nail or skin. You might even forget that it’s there!

  • KeryFlex is unaffected by detergents, acetones, and polishes. You can paint them up all pretty just like all your other nails.

KeryFlex lasts 6-8 weeks on average before you need to repeat the procedure. That’s 2-3 times as long as normal fake nails can go without touch ups, without any of the harmful effects.

What Can I Expect from the Procedure?

Let’s walk you through it.

Right now, you probably have a toenail that’s a lot thicker than normal, and may be excessively warped, cracked, or brittle. So we’ll file it down as much as possible.

The KeryFlex nail will have to be bonded to your real toenail, but fortunately we only need about 15-20 percent of your nail remaining in order to get a good, sturdy seal. That gives us a lot of wiggle room even with toenails that have been damaged pretty extensively.

Once your nail is appropriately slimmed down, we’ll apply the bonding agent first, then a coat of the resin on top of it. This gets cured under an ultraviolet light for two minutes, in order to make it nice and hard. If necessary, we’ll reapply and cure additional coats and touch of the KeryFlex resin as needed.

After everything has been cured, we’ll mold, shape, file, and buff the nail so that it looks and feels just like a normal, healthy nail.

Then, once you’re happy with the result, we’ll apply a clear sealant to protect the nail and make it non-porous and non-permeable. That gets cured one last time and—viola!—you’re done.

The whole process, from start to finish, usually takes less than 30 minutes. Obviously, that varies depending on how many toes we need to work on, but the point is it’s quick—especially when compared against the months and months it would otherwise take for clear nails to be restored the natural way.

It’s also, in case you were worried, 100% pain free.

As for the long-term effects?

Like we said, one application typically lasts up to two months before you need to get KeryFlex reapplied. And if you’re undergoing medical treatments for your fungal toenails (like you know you should), you’ll eventually stop needing the KeryFlex sessions as healthy nail tissue gradually grows back in.

The KeryFlex nail should be able to withstand almost anything you throw at it. However, in rare cases the bonding agent may fail and the resin nail may detach. This is most likely to happen in situations where the nail is subjective to repetitive trauma—running in ill-fitting shoes, for example.

Furthermore, while you can happily wash it, paint it, and flaunt it, we don’t recommend you use nail clippers on your KeryFlex nail. Use a file instead.

Anything Else I Should Be Concerned About?

KeryFlex is very safe. However, there are a few circumstances where it may not be recommended. These include:

  • You’re pregnant or nursing.
  • You’re allergic to any of the ingredients or components used in the KeryFlex system.
  • You suffer from certain conditions, including peripheral neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, arterial insufficiency, suspicious pigmented lesions on the nail, or ingrown toenails.

If you have any concerns about whether or not KeryFlex would be safe for you, please feel free to consult your doctor, our staff, or one of the doctors at Carmel Foot Specialists.
