Is Your Spa As Clean As You Think?

A clean spa is a safe spa. So, we have to ask … just how safe is your local spa?

If it’s not as clean as podiatrist-owned Foot & Body Boutique, you may be putting your feet in serious jeopardy for fungal and bacterial infections.

Sure, everything at “Other Spa LLC” might look squeaky clean on the surface. But just because it looks clean doesn’t mean it is clean:

  • How many people have used that foot bath today?
  • What kinds of organisms might be hiding in those whirlpool pipes?
  • How many different pairs of feet have touched those tools?
  • Does that blue “sanitizing” solution actually work?
  • When is the last time they changed it?

Unfortunately, the neighborhood boutique might not be quite as clean as you thought.

The Dangers of an Unsanitary Spa

Salon-borne diseases and illnesses are on the rise.

Just how big is the problem? Get this: more than one million Americans will walk into a spa this year and walk out with a bacterial or fungal infection.

If you’re lucky, you might just end up with athlete’s foot, which is unsightly but usually fairly easy to treat at home. The not-so-lucky might discover fungal toenail infections or even plantar warts developing not long after their day at the spa.

Substandard infection control practices are a big part of the problem. If contaminated water remains in foot baths or piping, or tools aren’t sterilized to medical-grade standards after each use, infections can easily spread from person to person.

Unsafe procedures, like pushing back cuticles too far, can play a role as well. If your nail techs aren’t properly trained and licensed—or are just careless—their work can leave an “open window” for bacteria or fungi to get into your system and start making a mess.

But here’s a dirty secret (pun intended): even spas and boutiques that are “up to code” and pass every state inspection can harbor harmful micro-organisms on tools and in baths and pipes. Most facilities just aren’t using the safest and cleanest chairs, tools, and techniques available because they’re (1) expensive, and (2) not legally required to do so.

The legal minimum? It just isn’t very good.

So if you truly want a clean, safe, relaxing pedicure or manicure, you need a spa that goes way above and beyond the state requirements for cleanliness, sterilization, and professionalism in every respect—from the tools, to the environment, to the people who work there.

That’s what you’ll find at The Foot & Body Boutique—in our opinion, nobody does luxurious pampering safer or better!

We Offer the Cleanest Spa Experience in Charlotte

How do we show our commitment to a clean, safe environment? Let us count the ways:

Our owners, operators, and supervisors aren’t just businesspeople—they’re licensed, practicing doctors of podiatric medicine. In fact, they’re the ones running Carmel Foot Specialists, the podiatric clinic next door.

We opened the Foot and Body Boutique in part because our podiatry practice saw so many patients come in with unsightly salon-borne infections, and we wanted to be able to provide a safer and healthier experience for our patients—as well as the greater Charlotte community!

Because we’re doctor-owned, we’re not just out to make a quick buck—we thoroughly understand the medical and health needs of your feet and make safety our top priority.

Our staff aren’t just aesthetic nail technicians. They’re certified medical nail technicians with advanced training and have successfully passed their exams in order to provide cosmetic services to medical-grade standards.

At the Foot and Body Boutique, no one is going to carelessly cut your cuticles too short or do anything to jeopardize the health and safety of your nails and feet. And if any of our technicians do notice a more serious foot problem, we can always consult with one of our foot and ankle physicians next door or make a quick referral appointment right then and there—how’s that for convenient?

We use an autoclave for hospital-grade sterilization of all our tools and implements. Autoclaves are pressure chambers that heat high-pressure saturated steam to around 250 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to kill all bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

It is the highest level of sterilization available, and the same equipment that the podiatrists in the clinic use to sterilize their surgical equipment—that’s how high the standard is! If it isn’t clean enough to operate with, it isn’t clean enough for your feet.

Like we said, we take this very seriously.

Our pedicure chairs are pipeless and use air, rather than water, to operate the turbines. This eliminates any possibility of infected water remaining in the pipes and recirculating from a previous client.

The problem with pipes is that they’re a nightmare to clean and extremely good at trapping bacteria. Even if you go through the agonizing routine of “cleaning” them with a long brush between every single use, there’s still a pretty good chance some unwanted germs will evade extermination and get pumped into the next bath.

By contrast, pipeless chairs are very easy to clean. After each guest, we simply remove and sterilize the turbines, refill and run a cycle, then clean it again. There’s no place for fungi or bacteria to hide, and so the risk of transmission is much, much lower.

Any tools that cannot be sterilized in the autoclave (files, buffers, polish brushes, etc.) are never re-used. In fact, you can take them home with you. It’s our gift to you, and when you use them at home you can be reminded of how awesome your time with us was!

We don’t even share polish bottles. When you pick out your color, we’ll pour it into a sterilized cup and apply it with a single-use brush. That way, there’s no chance of cross-contamination.

Don’t Settle for a Spa with a “So-So” Commitment to Sanitation!

You don’t have to put your feet at risk anytime you want luxurious pampering. Our staff are totally committed to giving you the safest and cleanest possible pedicure in a relaxing and calming environment.

We’re biased, but for our money there’s no better place to come get your nails done! Appointments are required, since we’re a small boutique and we want to make sure we have a chair available for you. Please call (704) 331-2111 to schedule.
